Indian Railways offers a massive, often overlooked opportunity for last-minute travelers: Current Booking.

If a train has vacant seats after the reservation chart is prepared, the railway opens those exact seats to the public at a discount.

Here is everything you need to know about how the 10% discount works, when to book, and the strict rules associated with Current Booking tickets.

What is Current Booking?

When regular advance bookings close and the first reservation chart is generated, there are sometimes empty seats left over. These vacancies happen due to last-minute cancellations, unutilized VIP/Defence/Ladies quotas, or unsold Tatkal tickets.

Instead of letting the train run empty, Indian Railways pools all these leftover seats and releases them under "Current Availability" (shown as CURR_AVBL on IRCTC).

The 10% Discount

To incentivize passengers to fill these last-minute vacancies, Indian Railways offers a 10% discount on the base fare of the ticket.

• No Premium Charges: Unlike Tatkal, which charges a premium for last-minute booking, Current Booking is entirely free of surge pricing or Tatkal fees. 

• Applicability: The discount applies to vacant berths across all classes and all trains, including premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto.

 

When Does the Booking Window Open?

Timing is everything if you want to secure a Current Booking ticket.

• Opening Time: The window opens immediately after the first reservation chart is prepared. For daytime trains, this is typically 4 to 8 hours before the scheduled departure from the originating station. For early morning trains, charting usually happens the night before. 

• Closing Time: You can book these tickets up to 30 minutes before the train departs, right before the second and final chart is generated.

 

Crucial Current Booking Rules & Restrictions

Because these are last-minute, heavily discounted tickets, IRCTC enforces strict conditions:

1. 100% Confirmed Only: You will never be waitlisted or given RAC status under Current Booking. If you get a ticket, it is guaranteed with a confirmed coach and berth number. 

2. No Boarding Point Changes: Once you book a Current ticket, you cannot change your boarding station under any circumstances. 

3. No Passenger Modifications: You cannot change the name, age, or gender on a Current Booking PNR. 

4. Availability is Dynamic: You are competing with everyone else trying to grab the few remaining seats, so you must be quick once the chart is prepared.

 

How to Book

You do not need to go to the station to get this discount. You can book CURR_AVBL tickets exactly how you book normal tickets:

1. Open the IRCTC website or app. 

2. Search for your train after the chart is prepared (usually 4–8 hours prior). 

3. If seats are available, the class will show CURR_AVBL in green, along with the exact number of vacant seats (e.g., CURR_AVBL-0012). 

4. Click book, and the 10% discount will automatically be applied to the base fare at checkout.

 

There is more to know! While the 10% discount is the primary draw of Current Booking, there are a few important technicalities, restrictions, and exceptions built into the IRCTC rules that you need to be aware of:

1. The Discount Exclusions

The 10% base fare discount is widely applied, but it is not universal.

• Premium Trains Exception: If you are booking a Suvidha train or certain premium dynamic-fare trains, the Current Booking fare will be charged at the last booked fare (which could be the highest dynamic slab), meaning you might not see a discount. 

• Tatkal Quota Premium Waiver: Even if you don't get a 10% discount on a specific route, Current Booking tickets are still cheaper than Tatkal tickets because they do not carry any Tatkal premium or surge charges, just the standard base fare.

 

2. Strict Passenger Restrictions

IRCTC is very rigid about who can travel on a Current Booking PNR. Once a CURR_AVBL ticket is generated:

• No Name Changes: You cannot transfer the ticket to another family member or change the name on the PNR. 

• No Age/Gender Modifications: If you make a typo in the age or gender during the rushed booking process, it cannot be modified later.

 

3. Limited Concessions Allowed

Under normal advance booking, various passenger profiles (patients, students, etc.) can sometimes claim fare concessions. However, under Current Booking:

• Only Senior Citizens & Divyangjan (Disabled): The system will only accept and process concessions for senior citizens and disabled passengers. All other concession types are blocked.

 

4. Boarding Point & Route Rules

Because the reservation chart is already printed and finalized, the logistics of your journey are locked in:

• No Boarding Point Change: You must board at the exact station you booked from. The "Change Boarding Point" feature is entirely disabled for Current Booking PNRs.

• No "Cluster" or Break Journeys: You cannot book tickets to cluster stations (stations not on the direct route of the train) or book a ticket with an official "Break Journey".

 

5. What Happens After the 2nd Chart?

You have until 30 minutes before departure to grab these tickets.

• Once the second (final) chart is prepared at that 30-minute mark, the online Current Booking window completely closes. 

• Any seats that are still vacant after the second chart is finalized are digitally handed over to the onboard Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE). At that point, you can only get the seat by physically boarding the train and purchasing it directly from the TTE via their Handheld Terminal (HHT).
