Auto-Upgradation Notification: PNR remains unchanged; SMS alerts arrive 4 hours before departure.

The notification and tracking process for an auto-upgraded Indian Railways ticket is designed to keep your original booking identity intact while alerting you just before departure.

Here is everything you need to know about how the notification system, PNR behavior, and alert timelines work:

1. The PNR Remains Entirely Unchanged

When you receive an auto-upgradation, your 10-digit PNR number does not change.

  • You do not need a new ticket, a new transaction ID, or a new printout.
  • All historical data, ticket lookup queries, and online tracking links will continue to function seamlessly using your original 10-digit PNR. The system simply updates the backend database to map your old seat to your new, higher-class berth.

2. The 4-Hour SMS Alert Window

Indian Railways (via CRIS/IRCTC) automatically triggers notification messages when the final reservation charts are prepared.

  • Timing: Charts are typically finalized roughly 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train from its originating station (or the previous night for early-morning trains).
  • The SMS: If your PNR is selected for a free upgrade, an automated SMS is sent to the registered mobile number provided during booking. The text explicitly states that your ticket has been auto-upgraded and provides your new Coach Number and Berth/Seat Number.

3. Never Rely Solely on the SMS (The Network Risk)

While SMS alerts are standard, relying on them completely can be risky. Telecom delays, network congestion, or blocked promotional messages can sometimes delay or prevent the text from reaching your phone.

  • The Safe Practice: Because SMS delivery can fail, you should proactively check your PNR status online (via the IRCTC app, RailOne, or official web portals) roughly 3 to 4 hours before departure.
  • Checking your PNR explicitly confirms whether an upgrade has occurred so you don't accidentally board the wrong coach.

4. Where to Find Your Name After the Notification

Once upgraded, your physical presence on the train's documentation shifts completely:

  • Your name will disappear from the reservation chart pasted outside your original lower-class coach.
  • Your name, along with your updated coach and berth assignment, will appear exclusively on the fresh reservation charts pasted outside the new higher-class coach.

Checking your status digitally via PNR lookup before arriving at the platform ensures you walk directly to the correct coach without any last-minute panic.

There is one key technical and operational update to keep in mind regarding the notification timeline: the chart preparation window has shifted.

While notifications and SMS alerts used to go out strictly 4 hours before departure, Indian Railways updated its Passenger Reservation System (PRS) chart preparation rules:

  • The Timing Update: Reservation charts—and by extension, the auto-upgradation algorithm and SMS alerts—are now typically processed roughly 8 hours before the train's scheduled departure (or around 9:00 PM the previous night for early-morning trains departing before 2:00 PM).
  • What Stays the Same: Your 10-digit PNR number remains completely unchanged, and once the system executes the upgrade during this charting phase, an SMS notification detailing your new coach and berth is dispatched to your registered mobile number.

Even though your 10-digit PNR remains identical and the upgrade is finalized during the chart preparation window (which can occur anywhere from 8 to 10 hours before departure), there is a brief technological window to keep in mind:

  • SMS Delivery Delays: While the automated SMS alert carrying your new coach and berth details is triggered immediately when the chart locks, telecom network congestion can occasionally delay the text message by 30 to 60 minutes.
  • The Digital Sync Delay: Sometimes, third-party apps take a little longer to sync with the central CRIS database right after the charts are published. If you check your PNR the exact minute charting is completed, it may temporarily show conflicting data before fully updating to display your new class and berth.

Pro-Tip: If you know your train's charting window has passed, always refresh or re-query your PNR directly on the official IRCTC/RailOne app or website rather than waiting solely for the SMS, ensuring you step onto the platform with absolute clarity on your updated coach.
